Our Members
Founded in March 1998 in the Detroit metro area, Axemen M/C was established by 12 original members with a shared vision of creating a motorcycle club exclusively for active and retired members of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). What began as a small group has since grown into an international organization, encompassing 35 chapters across 17 U.S. states and Canada. Despite this expansion, Axemen M/C remains committed to its founding principle: “Quality over Quantity.”
The Axemen M/C stands out by blending the brotherhood of firefighting with the camaraderie of motorcycling. Members are bonded by their shared experiences, values, and a commitment to uphold the traditions of both communities. The club’s activities reflect this dual dedication, fostering a sense of fellowship among firefighters while promoting the love of motorcycling.
Many of the Axemen chapters operate as 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, organizing charity events year-round to give back to the community. These events support a variety of causes, including burn camps for children, medical research in areas such as cancer, Parkinson’s, and ALS, and donations to hospitals and families in need within local communities. Axemen M/C’s commitment to charity is a testament to their core values of service and brotherhood, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
With their international reach and community impact, Axemen M/C continues to honor its roots while expanding its positive influence across borders.
How we got started
When firefighters retire, they often miss the brotherhood they valued on the job and still feel a strong desire to serve their community. This motorcycle club offers them both—a tight-knit camaraderie and a purposeful way to continue giving back through charity work, supporting the local community and those in need.
What we do
Active and retired IAFF members are dedicated to giving back and supporting those in need. Through our efforts, we’ve provided food, toys, and essential furnishings to families in need.
We've offered financial assistance to injured motorcyclists, donated to cancer charities, and supported child rescue organizations. Our commitment to making a difference runs deep, as we continually strive to bring hope and relief to those facing hardship.
The Thrilling History of the Axemen Motorcycle Club
March 1998:
It all began with a spark of brotherhood! The Axemen Professional Firefighters Motorcycle Club was born as Michigan Chapter #1, led by Bob Roths, a firefighter from Inkster, Metro Detroit. The fire ignited, and while the original crew eventually moved on, the flame still burns strong, with Mark Hollandsworth—our longest-serving member—joining the ranks in late 1998.
2000:
A new chapter of excitement! Detroit firefighter Ed White took over as President of Michigan Chapter #1, driving the club to new heights. Under Ed’s leadership, the club created the legendary Hotter Than Hell Charity Event to support the Great Lakes Burn Camp. The club was growing fast, launching Michigan Chapter #2 in Grand Rapids, marking the dawn of a much bigger movement.
Fall 2007:
Things really started to heat up! Under the dynamic leadership of President Karl Kuss (since 2004), Michigan Chapter #1 locked in the Detroit Clubhouse. Membership skyrocketed to nearly 100, and the Axemen expanded far and wide. Ohio, New York, Washington, Illinois, and Indiana—one by one, new chapters formed, cementing the Axemen as the premier Firefighter Motorcycle Club!
2009:
With explosive growth, Michigan Chapter #1 realized they couldn’t juggle both national duties and their beloved clubhouse. Enter the National Board! Gary Dell took the reins as National President, with Wild Bill, Chuck, Kozmo, and Chief Huyck rounding out the first-ever National Executive Board. The Axemen were ready to conquer the nation!
2010:
And the momentum kept building! Brent Gilbert took charge as Michigan Chapter #1 President, and six years later, he proudly stepped into the role of National President. Under his fearless guidance, the Axemen Nation grew even stronger, adding new chapters—including their first international one in Windsor, Canada!
2023:
A milestone year! The Axemen Nation celebrated its 25th anniversary in epic fashion. Nearly 300 riders from across the U.S. roared into Detroit for an unforgettable, action-packed four-day celebration. This was a party for the ages—one the Motor City won't soon forget!
2024:
The Axemen hit international soil! Thanks to the tireless efforts of National President Brent Gilbert, Windsor, Canada became the first international chapter—and the promise of many more to come! The future has never looked brighter as the Axemen Nation continues to grow, fueled by brotherhood, service, and an unbreakable bond.
The Axemen M/C is more than just a club, it's a legacy of dedication and action, committed to making a difference in communities far and wide. The road ahead is filled with endless possibilities, and we're just getting started!
